ASCENT Program

Teacher Education

Annual application deadline: April 30 | Apply Here

The ASCENT (Adjusted Scheduling and Curriculum in Education for Non-Traditional Students) Program is designed primarily to help public school paraprofessionals complete the field-based hours they need to begin student teaching. It also helps some students with special circumstances that make completing traditional field-based hours impossible.

Students in the ASCENT Program complete their field-based training during the summer. This 5-week training is condensed but more intensive than the 15-week field-based program offered during the regular academic year.

Students completing the ASCENT Program receive credit for one of the following classes (depending on level of specialization):

  • EDUC 4608 (for EC-6)
  • EDUC 4606 (for 7-12)
  • EDUC 4607 (for 4-8)
  • EDUC 4605 (for EC-12)

To apply, you must first:

  • Complete 39 hours of major requirement courses
  • Achieve THEA scores of at least 250 (reading), 230 (math), and 240 (writing)
  • Complete EDUC 3311 with a grade of C or better
  • Be admitted into the Teacher Education Program
  • Have a minimum of 2.75 GPA in your field of study (or required GPA if your department/major has a different requirement)
